‘Emergence’ is a sculpture inspired by ‘Project Sedan’ (1962) of ‘Operation Plowshare’, a mission of the United States to explore the development of techniques to harness nuclear explosions for civil construction projects. The thought-of applications were for instance in canal building and mining. The work expresses a utopian idea, namely to create a desired topographical formation with as little effort as possible from a single initiation like from a single cast or an explosion – in case of this work of a firecracker. If you think it further, in the sense that you could control far more, or even all parameters, one could even create a habitable structure.
