“Welcome to the next chapter of my ongoing research, The Whalesong Project, on the relations between space, place, architecture, sound and perception.
This time in Hamburg at the beautiful Brücke 10 im Strandhaus. The diner, a little bit further down the Elbe river is an inspiring place at the intersection of nature, big industry, and urban city life.
Over the next few months, I will be experimenting here with reactive soundscapes that will emphasize the sounds of this space.“
In Alexander Johannes’ artistic research project, The Whalesong Project, the artist explores the relationships between architecture, place, sound, and perception. The project follows a tradition of approaching the sounds that surround us with a musical mindset (e.g., The World Soundscape Project by R. Murray Schafer). Combining everyday soundscapes with contemporary music, especially electronic music, Alexander Johannes creates expanded ambient atmospheres incorporating the sonic phenomena of places and moments.
The focus of this project is on emphasizing environmental sounds and increasing the listeners auditory perception during and after experiencing the works.
In the current experiment, The Whalesong Project – Hamburg: Place as Impulse, the artist is developing a subtle and atmospheric soundscape for Brücke 10 over an extended period. Hereby, a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), is fed with live impulses from a microphone. These inputs are transformed by the instruments programmed in the DAW. In this way, an interactive soundscape is created that is subjective yet site-specific, and designed to operate harmoniously with the place.
